Meet the Beaver's Leader - Silver Otter

Meet Val.

On a Monday evening, 20 local boys and girls know Val as Silver Otter.

Val is in charge of planning and running the Beaver's Colony in Old Colwyn and has over 25 years experience of keeping young boys and girls interested and engaged in all kinds of fun activities.  Val is supported by a small group of dedicated volunteers.

Val says that she became involved in Scouting when her son (then 6 and now 31) wanted to join the Beavers but there wasn't a local group nearby so she set one up.  She hasn't looked back since!

There is currently a waiting list to join the Beaver's Colony but spaces do come up as children move on to the cubs.

So, if you'd like to put your child's name down for a place at the 3rd Old Colwyn Beavers Colony please get in touch at oldcolwynscouts@hotmail.co.uk.

(All group leaders receive training and are assessed by the Scouts Association before they can lead a group and everyone involved is vetted.)

Volunteering opportunities with the Old Colwyn Scout group

What can change a life?  Volunteering with the Scouts......

The Beaver's, Cubs and Scouts in Old Colwyn could not exist without a group of dedicated volunteers.  But more are always needed.

There are various things that the groups need help with and you don't need any specific skills to make a difference.  In fact volunteering can be a great way to develop your skills for work or University, to develop your CV as well as meeting new people and trying new things.

Volunteers would be welcomed to help with just about anything including helping with activities, designing advertising, distributing posters, fundraising activities, DIY and maintenance, cake making, helping sort out cupboards, cleaning the hut, gardening...........the list is endless.

It doesn't matter if you have a couple of hours once month or regular time to offer each week, your support would be welcome.

To find out more please get in touch via oldcolwynscouts@hotmail.co.uk

3rd Colwyn Bay vs 1st Mochre Cubs - Battle on the Beach

3rd Colwyn Bay cubs met head to head with 1st Mochdre cubs on the beach in Colwyn Bay to see which group would be crowned Masters of the Sandcastle.

Despite grey skies the cubs threw themselves into the task with great enthusiasm with 5 teams creating a variety of fantastic sandcastle designs.

Judging proved difficult with each team taking a prize for winning the different categories.  So, which Cubs troop reigned victorious?............The jury is out and a rematch will have to take place next year to see if there is a clear winner.

Congratulations to all the cubs who took part - you did a great job!!

Beavers' Activities - 16th June has been Making Planes

Have you ever wondered what your children do when they come to Beavers?

This week fifteen Beavers spent time designing a great array of aerodynamic creations (paper planes!).

Great concentration and imagination was shown by all the children who worked hard to create the best planes they could.

The photos below show them hard at work........

Beach Road, Old Colwyn Stream Clean - the Photos

Scouts and Cubs from the 3rd Colwyn Bay Troop came together yesterday to clean up their local community.

As part of our Scout community week we removed all the rubbish out of the Fairy Glen river along Beach road in Old Colwyn.

This is something that we normally do once or twice a year. The river and surrounding park is a beautiful area within Old Colwyn but unfortunately it gets all sorts of rubbish tangled up along the river banks. We go through the river picking up all the litter and rubbish that has gathered over the several months. This year we have removed several bags of rubbish including an old bike and lots of plastic bottles!

We chose to tidy this stretch of river as it is runs passed our Scout hut on Beach Road, and as we often enjoy the surrounding park it seems only fair that we get involved with making sure it remains clean and tidy. Although the water was a little cold last Tuesday night the Scouts had a great time clearing the river and it is one of the many activities that we get involved with.

8 year old Cub Nathaniel said "It was lots of fun and good to do something to tidy up.  I really liked getting wet!".

If anyone is interested in joining the Old Colwyn Scouts then  contact us via our email address at  oldcolwynscouts@hotmail.co.uk  to find out more.

Old Colwyn Scouts - Local history

Scouting is recorded in Old Colwyn from the early days with the formation of the 3rd Old Colwyn scout group registered in 1927.

Old records and photographs are a great glimpse of times gone by but it is nice to see girls and boys continue to enjoy scouting activities which had been enjoyed by parents, grandparents and even great- grandparents before them.

More details of the background of the 3rd Colwyn Bay scout group can be found under the History tab above.
